So new roomie and I are carless. That's fine. Except for when you need to grocery shop. Then it's not so much a matter of HOW you'll get there, and becomes more a strategic battle. So we walk to Safeway from our house. Sure we could have taken the bus, but paying 2 dollars for an in-town trip didn't seem to make sense to us. Plus it was a GORGEOUS day so we took advantage of it. So we arrive at Safeway with our lists and baskets, and as our baskets start to get heavier we realized that maybe we shouldn't be as liberal in our shopping as someone with a CAR would be. So we get what we think is necessary (since it was a hot day beer was added to the list. This will come back into play later in the story). Once we get all rung up and bagged it's time to make the trek back home. I offered to pay for bus passes since the bus stops a block from our house. Roomie said, "hey, these bags aren't that heavy...I bet we could make it without the bus!" I agreed, since my bags weren't that heavy and because bus people are crazy, and continued on sans bus.
About 1/3 of the way home my arms are screaming at me. Not because the bags are heavy, but because the bags are awkward, and the constant shifting is wreaking havoc on my joints. Two thirds of the way there I realize it's the beer that is causing most of the agony, and nearly resolve to drink a couple JUST to make the load lighter. I decided against it...even if Forest Grove DOES have an open can policy. We're about 5 blocks from home when we see a shopping cart right behind the science building. Dare we steal it (and return it the next shopping trip) and use it to haul our groceries home? At this point even Roomie is getting fed up with carrying this stuff, so with the approval of the lady who lives across from the science building we load up and cut through campus to get home quicker. I wanted to go around but Roomie said this route was quicker, plus, school's over and there's no WAY we could run into someone we know! We're about to cross the street to the Admissions building area dnd lo and behold...Hello Megan Jones! Thankfully she didn't make a HUUUUUUUGE deal of our ghetto-tabulous transport and merely giggled at the sight. We finally made it home, and now there is a shopping cart in our complex. Maybe the neighbors will take it back for us. So yeah. We rule...kinda.
